Name: |
Baby
Ruth
Chocolate
Bar
|
|
| Description: |
  |
Baby
Ruth is a candy bar that is made of
chocolate-covered peanuts and nougat,
though the nougat found in it is more
like fudge than is found in many other
American candy bars. The bar was a
staple of Chicago-based Curtiss Candy
Company for some seven decades. After
a series of mergers and acquisitions,
the candy bar is currently produced
by Nestlé.
What's
in a Name?
Although the name of the candy bar
sounds nearly identical to the name
of the famous baseball player, Babe
Ruth, the Curtiss Candy Company has
traditionally claimed that it was
named after President Grover Cleveland's
daughter, Ruth Cleveland.
Nonetheless,
the bar first appeared in 1920, as
Babe Ruth's fame was on the rise and
long after Cleveland had left the
White House and 16 years after his
daughter had died.
Moreover,
the company had failed to negotiate
an endorsement deal with Ruth, and
many saw the company's story about
the origin of the name of the bar
as merely a way to avoid having to
pay the baseball player any royalties.
Ironically, Curtiss successfully shut
down a rival bar that was approved
by, and named for, Ruth, on the grounds
that the names were too similar in
the case of George H. Ruth Candy
Co. v. Curtiss Candy Co, 49 F.2d 1033
(1931).
Trivia:
Being a marketing genius,
company founder Otto Schnering chartered
a plane in 1923 to drop thousands
of Baby Ruth bars over the city of
Pittsburgh -- each with its own mini
parachute.

Name: |
Battenburg
Cookies
& Cakes |
|
| Description: |
  |
Of
of, if not THE, quintessential British
teatime cakes and a real favourite.
Battenberg
cake (also: Battenburg cake, Window
cake) is a light sponge cake which,
when cut in cross section, displays
a distinctive two-by-two check pattern
alternately coloured pink and yellow.
The cake is covered in marzipan and,
when sliced, the characteristic checks
are exposed to view. These coloured
sections are made by dying half of
the cake mixture pink, and half yellow,
then cutting each resultant sponge
into two long, uniform cuboids, and
joining them together with apricot
jam, to form one cake.
The
origin of the name is not clear, but
one theory claims that the cake was
created in honour of the marriage
in 1884 of Queen Victoria's granddaughter
to Prince Louis of Battenberg. The
four squares of the cake are said
to represent the four Battenberg princes.
Battenburg
markings are high-visibility yellow
and blue/green/red/black fluorescent
chequered vinyl squares, affixed in
recent times (since 2001 or so) to
the sides of Emergency service vehicles
in the United Kingdom in order to
make them more visible on the roads.
Typical colours of some UK emergency
services' battenburg markings: Blue
and Yellow - Police; Green and Yellow
- Ambulance/Paramedics; Red and Yellow
- Fire Brigade; Light red and Yellow
- National Blood Service; Red and
Blue - Railway Response (Network Rail);
Green and Blue - HM Revenue and Customs

| Description: |
     |
It
was after World War II ended that
Topps developed its Bazooka Bubble
Gum product in Brooklyn, New York.
It was named after the humorous musical
instrument which entertainer Bob Burns
had fashioned from two gas pipes and
a funnel in the 1930s. (This contraption
also gave its name to the armor-piercing
weapon developed during the War.)
Bazooka, with its
distinctive name, taste, and red,
white and blue logo and packaging,
soon became a familiar part of Americana.
As a matter of fact, a psychological
study of tastes and smells that bring
back memories found that one of the
most frequently identified items was
Bazooka Bubble Gum.
Bazooka
is also famous for the popular series
of Bazooka Joe comics, first introduced
in 1953 to add extra interest for
youngsters. Topps has developed more
than 700 comics over the years.
As
popular today as it ever was.

League Chew
Gum |
|
| Description: |
  |
Big
League Chew is a brand of bubble gum
that is shredded and packaged like
chewing tobacco.
It
was created by baseball players Rob
Nelson and Jim Bouton as an alternative
to the tobacco-chewing habit common
among ballplayers.
According
to the 2005 packaging, over 450 million
pouches of the gum have been sold
since 1980.
Although
claiming to be chosen by professional
players, the cartoonish brand—packaged
in flashy colors such as neon green—is
clearly marketed to children as well.
Despite this, LeBron James was reportedly
a devoted user of the gum before signing
an endorsement deal with Bubblicious.
In
addition to the original bubble gum
flavor, it comes in cotton candy,
grape, strawberry, watermelon, sour
cherry, and sour apple flavors.
It
is produced by Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company
in Chicago, USA.

Bullets
Boiled
Candy |
|
|
Description: |
  |
|
Black
Bullets are a very traditional mint
flavoured sweet, whose origins are lost
in the mists of time. Black Bullets
themselves are a fairly typical sweet
from the North East of England where
the word "Bullet" is a dialectic
term for any boiled sweet.
One
myth surrounding Black Bullets is that
they derive their distinctive shape and
size from having been made in the moulds
for musket balls. While we cannot say
for sure whether this is the case, we
can say that they do not form part of
the modern production technique!
Indeed
one theory behind the growth and popularity
of Black Bullets in the North East of
England is down to their clean mint
flavour, which was welcomed by the miners
and industrial workers, who were not
allowed to smoke at work.

Assortment/Box
 |
|
| Description: |
  |
Nestles
famous Black Magic chocolates. Box
of seductive dark chocolate especially
made for the connoiseur.The
romantic theme was adopted for Black
Magic as soon as it was launched in
1933.
Early
radio advertising featured dramatisations
of romantic rendezvous featuring Black
Magic, but it was the newspaper and
magazine adverts which really launched
the romantic theme. Black Magic advertising
showed women writing letters to friends
about their romantic encounters over
a box of Black Magic.
In
1933, a pound box of Black Magic cost
just two shillings and ten pence.
Prior to the launch, Rowntree had
really done their homework. Over 7,000
consumers were asked about their particular
chocolate preferences and 3,000 people
taste tested Black Magic against the
most expensive chocolate assortments,
with Black Magic coming out on top.
This was a very early example of mass
market research.
Flavours include:
Buttery Toffee, Dreamy Fudge, Midnight
Coffee, Chocolate Truffle, Hazelnut
Cluster, Black Magic, Orange Sensation,
Caramel Caress, Rasberry Parfait and
Lemon Whisper.

"The

name used throughout the American
candy industry for sugar coated peanuts.
The
Boston Baked Bean is created using
the cold panned candy process. This
process involves building candy pieces
from single units, such as peanuts,
and tossing them into revolving pans
while adding flavor, color and other
candy ingredients. This process continues
until the pieces become the size desired.
.
Other
companies attempted to compete in
the market, but Ferrara Pan has risen
above their competitors and earned
world-wide recognition for their Boston
Baked Bean. Ferrara Pan is known for
making the highest quality and best

| Description: |
  |
Bottle
Caps are candies sold by Nestlé
under their Willy Wonka Candy Company
brand.
The
candies are made to look like metal
soda bottle caps, and come in grape,
cola, orange, root beer, and cherry
flavors. They have a generally sweet
but slightly sour taste to them but
with soda flavors and a slight fizzle
when eaten.
Bottle
Caps come in packages weighing 0.51
oz (14 g) and contain approximately
10 pieces. They also can be purchased
in a box containing 48 packages, or
in small individually wrapped pouches
of two candies, which are often given
out as Halloween treats in the U.S.
They may also come in a box with 6
