Cachou Lajaunie
Name:
Cachou Lajaunie
Boiled Candy
Description:
France

These tiny licorice-based candies are still made in Toulouse, where they were invented by the pharmacist Leon Lajaunie in 1890.

Don't let their size fool you: these candies are extraordinarily strong, a result of the mint extract which is added to the licorice, and are a powerful breath-freshener.

The trademark small yellow tin was invented by a clock-maker friend of Lajaunie, who designed it to fit in a watch-pocket.

The story of Cachou Lajaunie is a story of advertising as well as of confectionary.

In 1902 the famous poster artist Cappiello produced the first of many classic advertising posters for Cachou Lajaunie. These posters typically featured a seductive (often cigarette-smoking) woman. Eighty-three years later, in 1985, a Cachou Lajaunie television ad, once again featuring a voluptuous woman, was found so risqué that broadcasters refused to air it.

Calissons
Name:
Calissons
Novelty/Special
Description:
France

These diamond-shaped candies from Aix en Provence have been a favorite for centuries.

Manufactured according to time-honored tradition by Confiserie du Roy René, these calissons contain nothing but the highest-quality almonds and crystallized melon and orange peel ground together, spread atop a rice-paper base, and covered with a white royal icing.

The diamond-shaped boxes, in the distinctive form of the calisson d'Aix, make a perfect gift.

The 260g box contains 20 calissons.

Whether calissons were indeed invented by a lovestruck cook on the occasion of the wedding of Jeanne de Laval to King René of Anjou in 1473 is a matter of endless speculation.

Candy Cane
Name:
Candy Cane
Novelty/Special
Description:
CanadaIrelandUnited KingdomUnited States of America

A candy cane is a hard cane-shaped candy stick. It is traditionally white with red stripes and flavored with peppermint; however, it is also made in a variety of other flavors and colored stripes of different thicknesses. The candy cane is a traditional candy surrounding the Christmas holiday, although it is possible to find them throughout the year.

The candy cane was originally a straight, hard, and all-white candy stick invented by French priests in the early 1400s. The cane shape is traditionally credited to a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany, who, legend has it, in 1670 bent straight sugar sticks into canes to represent a shepherd's staff, and gave them to children at church services. Whether the choirmaster had the "Good Shepherd" in mind is unknown.

Another theory is, as people decorated their Yule trees with food, the bent candy cane was invented as a functional solution. Peppermint candy with red stripes first appeared in the mid-19th century in the Swedish town of Gränna, and striped candy canes in the early 20th century.

In Sweden the candy canes are called polkagris (literally "polka pig"). The aforementioned Swedish town Gränna is called the "polkagris capital of the world".

Candy canes are sometimes ground up and used as a topping for foods such as ice cream, fudge, or cookies, or as an additive to drinks such as hot chocolate or coffee. They are also hung as decorations on Christmas trees.

The British confectionery called "seaside rock" is manufactured in a similar fashion.

In Britain, "Candy Canes" are less common.

Urban Legends:
In recent years, apocryphal origin stories for the candy cane have become popular. Usually they suggest the candy cane was invented by an American Protestant, usually described as being an unnamed candy maker in 1870s Indiana, to represent Jesus Christ.

These stories typically suggest that the white of the candy cane represents Jesus's purity, the bold red stripes represents crucifixion, and the three thin red stripes stand for the Holy Trinity. This legend further posits that the general shape is for the "J" in Jesus, as well as perhaps to resemble a shepherd's cane.

A Kandy X-Change fact:
If you like Candy Canes you really should try the British Candy Rock.

Cenovis
Name:
Cenovis
Savoury Snack
Description:
Switzerland

Cenovis is a product based on yeast extract similar to Vegemite and Marmite, rich in vitamin B1. In the form of a dark brown food paste, it is used to flavor soups, sausages or salads. The most popular way to consume Cenovis is however to spread it on a slice of buttered bread.

Cenovis is popular in Switzerland, where it was developed in 1931 and is produced today by the company Cenovis SA.

People are said to usually have a very strong feeling for Cenovis when they taste some for the first time, either loving or hating it. It is usually cited as an acquired taste, being a product which one has to grow up with to appreciate.

The company presents the following story behind Cenovis:
In 1931, a brewer recycled the yeast used for the fermentation of beer: vegetal substances very rich in vitamin B1. After several tests, the product was perfected and a group of Swiss brewers launched Cenovis; the product was an immediate success and the famous spread was so good that it was included in the rations for Swiss soldiers… Healthy and strong soldiers!

Chiclets
Name:
Chiclets
Gum
Description:
Canada United States of America

Chiclets is another old-time classic gum brand that has been available for generations and can still be enjoyed today in its original form and flavor.

Frank H. Fleer based his product idea on a confection that was popular around the turn of the 20th Century, candy coated almonds.

Peppermint Chiclets were introduced in 1906 and are the original candy coated chewing gum. Over the years, Chiclets have been made in many different flavors and colors.

In 1929 when a box of ten Chiclets cost a nickel, a billboards and print advertising called the product "Peppermint gum iced with candy!"

In 1899 the leading gum manufacturers organized themselves into a conglomerate called the American Chicle Company. Gum makers in the organization included Adams, Beeman, Primley, Curtis, and S. T. Britten. In 1914, Fleer merged his company with the American Chicle Company.

Although the brand has been transferred or sold from one manufacturing company to another over the past century, it continues to exist in the same form, flavor, and nearly the same packaging.
