Le
chewing gum arrived in France in 1917
with American GIs, who carried it
in their war packs, but didn't catch
on until the American soldiers returned
during WWII, and distributed it by
the handful as they liberated French
towns.
Malabar
was created in 1958, and bubble-blowers
claim that it produces the largest
bubbles. Each piece of Malabar comes
wrapped with a vignette or cartoon;
the early ones are much sought after
by collectors.

Marmite
Savoury
Snack
|
|
| Description: |
  |
|
Marmite
is a British savoury spread made from
yeast extract, a by-product of beer
brewing.
It
is a sticky, dark brown paste with a
distinctive, powerful taste that polarises
consumer opinion.
This is reflected in the company's marketing
slogan: "Love it or hate it".
It
is similar to the Australasian Vegemite
and Swiss Cenovis, and is suitable for
vegetarians and vegans. There is also
an Australasian version of "Marmite",
although this uses a different recipe,
and has a much stronger flavour that
is comparatively sweet.
The
image on the front of the British jar
shows a marmite (French type of large
covered earthenware or metal cooking
pot).
The
British Marmite was originally supplied
in earthenware pots, but has long been
sold in glass jars that approximate
the shape of such pots. A thinner version
in squeezable plastic jars was introduced
in March 2006.
Small
single portions are available and ideal
for popping into an exchange package.

Mars
Bar
Chocolate Snack
|
|
| Description: |
      |
|
Made
of chocolate-malt nougat topped with
a layer of caramel and covered with
milk chocolate.
The
Mars Bar outside the USA is very similar
to the Milky Way sold within the United
States.
The
Mars bar was first produced in 1920
by Frank and Ethel Mars in Tacoma, Washington,
in the US.
It
was locally named the Milky Way bar
but called the Mars bar in Europe.
The
Mars Bar formerly sold in the USA was
slightly different from the Mars Bar
still sold in other countries, which
does not contain almonds. It has been
sold elsewhere as "Mars Almond".
There
are (or were) two slightly different
products known as the Mars Bar. Both
contained nougat topped with caramel
and covered with milk chocolate.
However,
the product formerly sold as Mars in
the USA contained almonds in the nougat,
whereas the Mars still sold elsewhere
does not.
Here's
a fun piece of trivia - in England in
1998 a man was sentenced to five years
in prison after he had stolen eight
lorry loads of Mars bars that weighed
more than 300 tons and were worth of
approximately £70,000 each ($140,000
in US Dollars)

Marshmallows
Chewy Candy
|
|
| Description: |
  |
|
Light
fluffy Marshmallow - great added to
cakes, toasted over a camp fire, melting
in a mug of Hot Chocolate or just eaten
asthey come.
Marshmallow
candy dates back to ancient Egypt where
it was a honey-based candy flavored
and thickened with the sap of the root
of the Marsh-Mallow plant (althea officinalis).
Marsh-Mallow grows in salt marshes and
on banks near large bodies of water.
It is common in the eastern United States.
Until the mid 1800's, marshmallow candy
was made using the sap of the Marsh-Mallow
plant. Gelatin replaces the sap in the
modern recipes.
