Nerds

Description:
CanadaUnited States of America

Nerds are candies sold by Nestlé under their Willy Wonka Candy Company brand.

Introduced in 1983, Nerds are small candies that come in a variety of abstract shapes and flavors, and are usually sold in a box that has two separate flavors, each with a separate opening device.

The separation of two distinct flavors in one commodity has generated success for Nerds, likely because consumers can control their experiences. A breakfast cereal based on this concept appeared in the 1980s, but had a short life.

Nerds are of varied flavors and varied colors, ranging from extremely sweet to extremely sour; often the two flavors in one box will contrast, and even one 'Nerd' may exhibit both extremes.

They are thickly glazed with carnauba wax, which gives them a hard 'bite', and a gloss. The nucleus of each candy is composed of one or more complete sucrose crystals.

Recently, Wonka came out with Sour Nerds. The first released Sour Nerds came out with the all-new flavors, Lightning Lemon and Amped Apple. The second released package featured Shocking Strawberry and Electric Blue. There are also 3 more varieties of flavors.

There are also several Nerds spin-off products by Willy Wonka:

Nerd Rope consists of a soft candy string with a variety of Nerds attached to the outside, and come in original, berry and tropical flavors. "As much fun to play with, as it is to eat, and vice versa".

Rainbow Nerds is a box of regular Nerds of multiple flavors, with no partition or any organization at all.

Jumbo Nerds is a box of regular Nerds of multiple flavors which are much larger than regular Nerds. The box depicts one jumbo Nerd on a teeter-totter with several regular sized Nerds trying to counter its weight.

Nerds Gum Balls are bubble gum balls filled with multiple flavors of Nerds on the inside.

Theme Nerds are sometimes manufactured seasonally for holidays such as Halloween or Valentine's day with names such as "Spooky Nerds". Flavors can include fruit punch and cherry.

Nerds Cereal, a now discontinued breakfast cereal that, like the candy, featured 2 separated flavors to a box. The cereal came with a mail-in offer for a Nerds cereal bowl, which also could be divided in two.

Techno-Nerds, a lesser-well known variety, was comprised of three compartments, green, blue, and multicoloured.

Dweebs, a now discontinued soft, chewy version of Nerds released mid-90s, that contained three separate flavors rather than only two. They were available only for a short time.

I n the 1980s there were several new flavors of Nerds introduced from time to time; for example, "Hot and Cold" Nerds (cinnamon & peppermint flavored), Blueberry and Raspberry, and Lemon and Lime (Blueberry Nerds can still be found in large packages of Rainbow Nerds).

One of the most unique ways of introducing these new flavors to the market was with small, plastic "Nerd" figures/toys (about 2-3 inches in height), which were hollow and contained the candies within. The color of the figure corresponded to the flavor of the candy (also printed on the access cap on the bottom of the toy);

it is uncertain how many flavors were produced in this manner, although Citrus Nerds were released through the toy premium. There are very few of the toy figures in existence today, and these would most likely be perceived as collector's items.

What could be simpler or tastier than this candy made from almonds, honey, pistachios, and egg whites?

The larger of the nougat bars come from the famous calisson-maker Confiserie du Roy René.

The smaller comes from Chabert et Guillot, based in the town of Montélimar, which has been the capital of nougat making ever since the first almond trees were introduced into the Vivarais region in 1650.

Both bars are soft (tendre) because made with beaten egg whites.

Nougats, like Calissons, are one of 13 traditional Christmas desserts.

Nutella is the brand name of a hazelnut-based sweet spread created by the Italian company Ferrero.

Although Nutella was first marketed in 1964, its predecessor — a spread named "Supercrema", had been marketed by Ferrero since 1951, and it was in turn derived from a previous product known as "Pasta Gianduja"; the latter was a solid block (not a spread) created by Pietro Ferrero, the brand founder, in the 1940's.

The main chocolate-like flavoring ingredient, hazelnut, is a typical product of the Langhe, the area of Piedmont where the Ferrero family originates (Pietro had its patisserie in Alba, Province of Cuneo).

These products were all preparations of gianduja, a chocolate and hazelnut blend developed in Italy after excessive taxes on cocoa beans hindered the diffusion of conventional chocolate.

Launch
In 1963, Pietro's son Michele Ferrero decided to revamp Supercrema, with the intention of marketing it Europe-wide; its composition was modified, as well as the label image and brand name: the name "Nutella" (based on the word "nut") and its logo were registered towards the end of the same year, and remain unchanged to this day.

The first jar of Nutella left the Ferrero factory in Alba (in the Province of Cuneo, Piedmont), on April 20, 1964. The product was an instant success, and remains widely popular to this day. The estimated Italian production of Nutella averages 179,000 tons per year.

Although Nutella is marketed in a variety of packages, its stereotypical containers have always been those made of glass (plastic containers are more common in the USA and Greece).

Initially, the most popular glass containers were quite small, in fact just the size of a standard table glass for drinking, with the result that they can be used as normal table glasses once the product inside has been consumed. Different forms of these glasses are produced, turning them into collectible items.

Nowadays, Nutella is more frequently marketed in jars of a characteristic, trademarked shape. These are often 200-g, 400-g or 750-g jars, although in some countries (such as Italy and France), 3kg and 5kg jars are available.

In Australia Nutella is sold in the standard shape plastic jars with translucent plastic screw top lids.

Single serve catering packs aimed at the school lunch market are also available in retail stores - perfect for popping into an exchange package, its always a welcome addition!

If you've never tried it before you must get your hands on some, it is wonderful.
